MATERNAL HEALTH PROJECT OUTLINE

1. Project Summary and purpose for the main page:

Maternal Health Project (MHP) was funded by German Government via United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in Cambodia to improving the public’s knowledge and awareness of reproductive and maternal health issues amongst women and their partners. The ultimate aim, over time, is to give Cambodian audience accurate information, so that they can make their own well informed health decisions. This is also in support of Cambodia’s progress towards achieving Millennium Development Goal 5: Improving Maternal Health.

The main focus of this project is on Mass Media interventions aimed at improving Reproductive and Maternal Health among the general population and particularly rural and remote families. It is expected that at least 20 provinces will be covered by broadcasts and an estimated 85% of the total population will be able to access to information.

2. Activities of the project:

  • Radio Drama Activities:

The radio live show called Our Starting Point has been broadcasted since September 15, 2008 on two selected radio stations, FM 103MHz and FM 98 MHz. One-hour program of the radio live show is presented by two presenters. The show is included one episode of radio drama called The Music Mission and followed by a Question & Answer session. The listeners can make phone calls in to the program and discuss issues arising from that episode. To ensure active participation by all listeners, particularly girls and women, sending questions or comments by SMS text are encouraged as well.

It is planned that by 2009, an estimated 120 episodes of radio drama will be produced in Phnom Penh and be broadcast in the radio live show 240 times from Phnom Penh, 240 times from Battambang, Siem Reap, Kampot, and Kratie Provinces. It is at least 7 audience phone calls would be chosen per program.

Copied broadcast has been sending to provincial radio stations in Battambang, Siem Reap, Kratie and Kampot for re-broadcast in order to reach wider audiences. This creates better access for audiences in the Northwest region (Pursat, Pailin, Batteay Meanchey, and Ordormeanchey provinces) and the Northeast region (Stung Treng, and Prea Vihear) to listen to the radio program.

  • TV Drama Activities:

20 Episodes of TV Drama have been written, filmed and planned to be broadcasted on two leading TV stations in Cambodia, TV5 and CTN. The topic and themes of the drama are based on previous research and findings from the survey of Knowledge, Attitude, and Practice. The show will last for thirty minutes per session.
It is planned by November 2009; the 20 Episodes will be edited and broadcasted 20 times from Phnom Penh, 20 times/per station. It is estimated that with this airing arrangement, 85% of total population can easily access to the information and messages.

TV5 from Monday to Thursday, 6:30-7pm, starting from October 26, 2009.
CTN from Friday 4:30-5:00pm November 06, 2009.
